An Interview with Dennis Wise Author of In Guns We Trust DCBookMan: Can you tell us about your book? D Wise: It’s the story of young females, the desperation they experience, and their violent means of revival. Two pretty young teenagers, Honey and Bianca, become prostitutes under different circumstances. Honey does it to provide for her family. Bianca gets conned into the prostitution ring by a pimp posing as her one true love. The prostitution ring is connected to a major drug network that is in the middle of a bloody war. Honey and Bianca are recruited into an all female gang in which they are trained to seduce and kill on demand. The gangs leader is one of the most beautiful and treacherous women in New York. The story is full of sexual manipulation which turns some women into vicious masters and others into tortured slaves. DCBookMan: Where are you from? DWise: Baltimore. DCBookMan: What inspired you to write this book? DWise: More females are involved, front-line soldiers, in gangs and other criminal networks. Also, they are becoming the victims of human trafficking, sold into sexual slavery. In America, we see the young girls who were kidnapped in Eastern Europe. Those who were abducted here are shipped to countries where they have no support, and even less hope. Considering all of that, voluntary or involuntary involvement, I saw a desperate situation. So I wrote this book partly in hopes that girls might see the traps that await them. As for those who are already trapped? Hopefully, they can learn from some of the characters in this book. DCBookMan: How did you come up with the title? DWise: I chose the title “In Guns We Trust” because, frankly speaking, more young people seem to be embracing violence as a form of religion. They turn to guns for salvation and survival. Important to note here is that such thinking didn’t start with the present generation – nor did this mindset originate in the “hood”. Oppressed people around the world have a history of arming themselves, instead of relying on the law or the church. The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is purely based on that concept. Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Tse Tung once boldly declared: “Power comes thru the barrel of a gun”. Our beloved Malcolm X, while protesting voter discrimination demanded: “We’ll either use the ballot or the bullet”! The characters in this book desperately need empowerment. Therefore, the title “In Guns We Trust” reflects the survival creed of the women in this explosive story. DCBookMan: What other books are you writing? Tell us what to expect in the near future from your pen? DWise: I just completed my new novel “The Last Stop”, which is due for release in November of this year. This novel will shock, enlighten, and possibly outrage many people. It begins when seven women, pursuing equal rights/employment, become the first female guards inside a violent male prison. Meanwhile, the convict gangs, who control street drug trafficking, are earning millions while the guards live from paycheck to paycheck. “A jungle full of savages” is the often used description for the prison. Nothing in their training would prepare the women for the fears, temptations, and tragedies they are about to face. Sexually based pressure begins on their first day and it continues to increase until the reader becomes a witness to graphic scenes – some tender and some brutal. Many stereotypes are shattered here, therefore, the reader is cautioned not be in a hurry to judge or assume. Instead, the question should be asked “If I were in that situation, would I consider my morals more important than my survival? DCBookMan: What facility are you currently confined in? DWise: Arizona State Prison-Yuma, Dakota Unit. DCBookMan: What author or novels do you admire most? DWise: Manchild in The Promised Land by Claude Brown. Howard Street by Nathan C. Heard. Blood In My Eye by George Jackson. DCBookMan: What can we expect from you in the future? DWise: More novels carefully aimed to dispel myths. I also intend to try my pen at screenplay writing. DCBookMan: What is your favorite pastime? DWise: Reading stories about people who have overcome great odds. DCBookMan: Did you self publish or are you with a publishing house? DWise: I read books and manuals on self publishing prior to asking my brother to start a company. We learned each step of the process including copyright, printing cost, promotion, ect. A major publishing house could possibly give me more exposure in less time. However, I want to keep my work within the family. Books are valuable properties and stand to earn profit for many years. Therefore, they should become a part of the author’s estate. By self publishing, I can have more control over how my books are passed on from one generation to the next. DCBookMan: What advice can you give to other imprisoned writers who want to get their works published? DWise: Learn all you can about the publishing process. Before you put your work into anyone’s hands, you should know the steps yourself. If you understand the process, you will know if your work is being handled properly. DCBookMan: How can your fellow authors and readers keep in touch with you? DWise: My current address is: Dennis Wise #142767 Arizona State Prison-Yuma Dakota 7a-06 P.O. Box 13007 Yuma, Arizona 85366 DC Reviewer Gives Big Ups to Dennis Wise! "In Guns We Trust" is a vicious story. These hookers would make a trick rethink cheating on his wife. Dennis Wise has done a wonderful job taking you on the journey with Bianca, Paula, Angela and Champ. Bianca could be anybody's daughter, who has been so closely sheltered that when she finally does get a taste of the street life she just loses her damn mind! "In Guns We Trust" takes you into a world where the vagina monologues have not gone. However, they show that the power is in the "putty cat". Sharky and Champ who are rivals have a beef throughout the entire book. Sharky continues to send people to kill Champ and those who are close to him. However, the real mastermind behind Sharky is his sister (Sandy) who is in a whole breed of her own. Sandy has a crew of women who she has trained to kill on her command. Of course, this is after they make a man pay in more ways than one. This story is not to be taken lightly and will keep you wanting more. This is a must read with a hell of an ending. Big ups to Mr. Dennis Wise! Happy Reading!!!! Michelle Rawls DC Reviewer |
